Cadgwith

I went back to Cadgwith today to get one last paint in before I start on some oils. I`ve been trying to work out how I want to paint them. I nearly stayed a bit longer but was eager to get cracking so came back at lunchtime. I had a look around to see if there was anywhere as good to paint but I think the view I had was the best. Its a very nice little place with a pub and a cafe and restaurant and a few basic shops and a real working feel to the place. I think the people who live there are very lucky.

So I have come home and done an oil . I have to say I prefer the Gouache. But it`s ok. They will get better.

Mullion Oil on Canvas

Mullion. What a place! I seem to, however, constantly struggle with not really knowing what I am doing. You would think by now I would know but when I went in the studio this morning I was full of trepidation. I had two massive canvases ready and no idea how to fill them and even when I got started I had to push myself. Like pushing myself over a cliff. I am such a coward sometimes. But the push it seems was worth it in the end.

Mullion

I can't keep on doing these dark ones. It's coming along this one but I think I had better lighten up a little Don`t you? Self-indulgent possibly?
You have to experiment. Otherwise you just keep on repeating your self.

Anyway, I have now got my 30x40inch canvases from the Courier and I will prepare for some light biggies.

Mullion

Managed to get a bit more done on this. For me it is a bit pale and bland but my wife Lorraine likes it so I will finish it.

Mullion Oil

So having been out to Mullion and done a couple of Gouache sketches and froze my nuts off I went in the studio after a warm cup of tea and some left over Cous Cous and got started on this oil.
Which makes me even more excited to go back but this time to do some oil sketches so I can get the tones and colours right or roughly right. Hopefully back tomorrow.

Quick Gouache Sketched because it was a bit chilly.

Whistlefish Gallery St Ives

Had a great afternoonLorraine and me at Whistlefish Gallery in St Ives. They were opening a newly refurbished Gallery, in fact, their original Gallery as they also have galleries in Bude, Dartmouth, Falmouth, Looe, Newquay, Padstow, Plymouth, St Ives, St Ives Sale Gallery, and Truro.

It was great fun and I got to meet Hayley and Jessica and Lyn who is the founder. Such a vibrant forward looking company. The gallery looked stunning and I was very pleased to be there.
They have taken on eight of my paintings for cards and prints. It was a bit cold after all it is March but great fun and we went to the Sloop Inn afterwards.

Emm!

A little on the bleak side this. The technique is coming along and of course, it`s just the first sitting. It's an oil. It just lacks a little life but the overall effect is good.It is thinly painted which for me is good and has been a successful practice and step forward.
Now the one below which is acrylic for me has much more character. It just does not have that `looking at it straight in the face ` pleasure that oil on canvas has .So tomorrow I will try again but this time I will under paint in acrylic and finish in oil and see how that goes.

Just got to put in `The Old Standard` on the wall of the pub in the foreground which is in Hayle and I'll send it off to be photographed.

SShh! Don`t tell anyone I have been working over the weekend.

Its always the same .If I work over the weekend which usually I don`t except maybe a Saturday morning then it`s really hard to work on the Monday and that`s just how it panned out. I went for a swim instead and got some cat food.

Godrevy Lighthouse

Godrevy is a common theme for me and although the land is a bit close together I don`t really mind. A good start.

Newlyn am 2nd March 2017

So I have been twice. In the morning I worked in Gouache and in the afternoon acrylic. There may be enough information now for me to work this up in the studio tomorrow as it is going to pour down for the next few days and I`ll be in the studio. Oh! What fun, chilly fun!.  Especially the acrylic. I am using oil brushes which is new for me and is the result of me working in oil during the winter.
